Is Apple a Monopoly?
Tomorrow, Apple’s new product, the Apple Watch, will be launched worldwide. The watch, which they introduced in October 2014, is called a Health and Fitness device.
I’ll pass on it because I think first-generation Apple devices are generally like open beta tests. Although its design is far from traditional watches, I think it will probably sell as much as their other products. The Watch, which will operate based on the iOS operating system, will be entirely under Apple’s control.
Control over the operating system is felt as a threat, especially for software developers on the Apple platform. This control over the OS opens the door for Apple, the dominant force in the smartphone ecosystem, to enforce its own rules. When the iPad product was introduced, it was considered that the Macintosh operating system could gradually be reduced to larger-screen versions of these devices, and that computers could be transformed into devices entirely under their control.
Although such a step hasn’t been taken yet, it becomes evident that the spiritual influence of Steve Jobs, a strong advocate of the open web, is diminishing for Apple as the years go by.
I’m not really sure if they want to do this, but it’s not hard to understand how this environment makes them more money.
Using Apple products is definitely enjoyable. It’s just that they’re starting to squeeze the wrists a bit :)
