Is Apple a Monopoly?
Tomorrow, Apple will launch its new product, the Apple Watch, around the world. They introduced it in October 2014 and are calling it a Health and Fitness device.
I won’t buy it, because I think first-generation Apple products are usually like open beta tests. Its design is very different from traditional watches, but I’m sure it will still sell very well. The Watch will run a version of iOS, so Apple will have full control over it.
This level of control feels like a threat, especially for developers on Apple’s platform. By controlling the operating system, Apple can easily enforce its own rules. When the iPad came out, people thought that the Mac OS could slowly be replaced by bigger versions of iOS devices and that computers could become more locked down.
Steve Jobs, who once supported the open web, seems far from the spirit that made Apple special.
I don’t know if Apple truly wants this future, but it’s easy to see how it makes them more money.
Apple products are still fun to use. It’s just that they’re starting to squeeze the wrists a bit :)
